What is diphtheria?

Diphtheria is a serious disease that causes inflammation of the throat, nose and trachea as well as a fever, malaise, and problems breathing. The infection is caused by the bacteria Corynebacterium Diphtheriae and produces toxins that cause the sudden growth of a membrane in the throat that can lead to suffocation.

People with weakened immune systems, or living in unhygienic and crowded spaces, or who travel to areas still affected by diphtheria are most likely to develop the infection.

How does the diphtheria vaccine work?

The vaccine is made by inactivating the diphtheria toxin. Once inactivated, it can be injected safely, allowing the body to grow immunity safely without contracting the disease. Patients normally receive diphtheria vaccinations early in life and boosters are administered throughout childhood and adolescence. Immunisation drops over time which is why boosters are required ' especially when travelling to areas still affected by the disease.
