It can be easy to assume that with such a demanding education and fast-paced job that it can be hard to fit in those hobbies or passions you once enjoyed. However, getting that dream job doesn’t mean giving up other things you like such as travel, and there are actually great opportunities for those who are looking to utilise their skills while seeing other parts of the world.

Assisting fellow travel lovers abroad

Why not share your love for travel by assisting others on their epic adventures? There are plenty of options available for those who would like to work abroad and enjoy some downtime in a new country or state. Working on a cruise ship, travelling and assisting while on safari or working in a resort are just some of the opportunities available. 

Military careers

Looking to combine your love for medicine and travel while doing something for the country too? Joining the military could be one way to do it. Medics are required in a wide variety of places, from ships to warzones, and for this reason it won’t be suitable for everyone. However, if you are willing to accept the risks and give it a go, you may even be eligible for training and degree programs that will help you avoid major debt in getting qualified in medicine. 

Non-Governmental Organisations

While languages and cultures may vary from country to country, the need for quality medicine is always apparent. A medical degree can help break down any barriers and allow you to assist those requiring quality medical care abroad. A great way to do this is to get in touch with NGOs such as Oxfam or Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) who provide aid, immunisation and medical care in developing countries.

Keep in mind that this may be challenging as you probably won’t have the luxury of the same resources that you would find in an Australian hospital. You may also have to complete volunteer work before you get a paid post, but knowing you are helping others who are most in need is a truly rewarding experience.

Sports medicine

International athletes and sporting teams often have their own doctors and medical staff to travel with them, and can be a great way to combine love of sport and travel with your career. Keep in mind though, getting this position will require extensive experience and you may need to work your way up to this by working in a sports injury clinic or with local teams first.
