Keeping Fit in the Colder Months

For some of us, getting the motivation to get active and fit is hard at the best of times. It’s understandable, then, that many of struggle even more once those chilly days and even chillier nights greet us. As exercise is so essential to our overall health, it’s important to do what you can to maintain fitness in those colder months.

Here is some inspiration to get you started.

Get outdoors

We know the last thing you’ll want to do sometimes on a winter day is brave the outdoors – but hear us out. While it may not be as inviting as a spring or summer’s day, getting outside can still do wonders for boosting your mood and concentration. Rugging up and taking a brisk walk outside could be enough to burn calories while getting that blood pumping.

Keep in mind getting active in winter could be great fun, and there are plenty of winter activities to take advantage of. Head to the slopes for some skiing or snowboarding, or visit the nearest skating rink with family and friends.

Stay fit while indoors

Way too cold to brave the outside world? There are still things you can do while in the comfort of a studio, gym or pool. Yoga and Pilates are great for those looking to take a break and keep their muscles limber. If you have a gym membership, get your money’s worth and keep up your fitness routine through all seasons. An indoor pool is also a great option and, best of all, it’s heated.

Turn your home into your workout arena

Of course, keeping fit doesn’t require you to go out or require any money. There are plenty of ways to get active within your own home as well. If you have stairs, run or walk up them for a high intensity cardio and leg workout. You can bump up the intensity by taking two stairs at a time or doing star jumps in between.

There are plenty of tasks you can complete in an open area in the lounge or a spare room such as lunges, squats, sit up and push ups. If you want to make it a little more difficult you can also use weights (these can be actual weights or use heavy items such as full two-litre jugs). If you have been a few times and know what you are doing, or have instructional videos, Pilates and yoga can be enjoyed at home as well.

Get social

One of the best ways to stay motivated and get fit is to do it with friends or family. Making fitness a social affair can help make working out more fun and is a great way to hold each other accountable and ensure you stick to some form of routine.
